While most young people enjoy the support of family well into their twenties, the reality of young people coming out of care is radically different. Unless they are in continuing education, teens reaching 18 are no longer the responsibility of their in loco parentis, the Irish State. Instead, they are released to care for themselves out in the world with few backups. The HSE has recently introduced ‘after care’—but who gets that continuing care is solely at the discretion of the state.
